Carson City, NV (November 13, 2021) – Troopers with the Nevada Highway Patrol arrested the driver of a pickup truck that was towing an overweight boat down a steep mountain highway, reportedly causing a crash that killed two people and injured nine others in Carson City on Tuesday afternoon, November 9.
Investigators say their reports indicate that the brakes failed on the Ford F-350 that 25-year-old Roney Gonzalez-Otazo was driving eastbound on U.S. Highway 50. He was traveling from Spooner Summit at Lake Tahoe when he failed to stop at a red light at South Carson Street and allegedly caused the eight-car collision.
He’s been charged with reckless driving, operating an unsafe vehicle, failure to obey a stoplight, and driving without a license, Nevada Highway Patrol spokesman Charles Caster noted.
The victims of the fatal incident were identified as a Dayton couple, 74-year-old Don Powell and 70-year-old Tana Powell.
Caster added that Gonzalez-Otazo’s brakes likely overheated and failed. The boat disconnect from the Ford in the wreck and rolled a quarter-mile down the freeway before stopping.
An investigation is ongoing at this time, and further details have not been provided.
Our deepest condolences go out to the families of Don Powell and Tana Powell. Our thoughts are with the injured victims and their families. We hope for their full recovery.
