Understanding the most common types of accidents 

While there is limited data on the most common accidents in Salt Lake City, The Utah Department of Public Safety provides detailed information on crashes throughout the state. These statistics are tracked each year and account for additional factors outside of the type of collision.  

The most common accidents include the following: 

• Rear-end collisions. They comprise over 28 percent of all accidents in 2022. As noted above, rear-end collisions are most common at intersections. Usually, they occur when the rear or following driver fails to stop in time to prevent a crash.  
• Single-vehicle accidents. They account for more than 27 percent of all accidents in 2022. These collisions can occur in many ways. For example, a driver loses control of the vehicle while driving too fast or because they are impaired by drugs or alcohol.  
• Angled collision. More than 25 percent of accidents involve one vehicle striking another at a near-right angle. They often occur at an intersection when two cars are going straight on intersecting roads, and neither vehicle is turning.
