Las Vegas, NV (December 10, 2021) – Officers with the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department say that one person died and another person was arrested on suspicion of DUI after a two-vehicle accident happened near downtown Las Vegas early Friday morning, December 10, according to police.
The incident was reported around 1:35 a.m. at the intersection of Gass Avenue and Las Vegas Boulevard, located just north of Charleston Boulevard.
Officers said that their initial reports indicated that the driver of a 2021 Jeep Wrangler was heading east on Gass and ran a red light at the intersection at Las Vegas Boulevard. Shortly thereafter, they crashed into the driver’s side of a 2021 Toyota Camry heading north, according to LVMPD.
A passenger in the Toyota, identified only as a 50-year-old Las Vegas man, was rushed to UMC in critical condition but was later pronounced dead. The Toyota’s driver sustained moderate injuries.
Police say the driver of the Jeep, a 24-year-old Henderson woman, showed signs of impairment and was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence.
The investigation is ongoing, however, and further details have not been provided.
We would like to extend our deepest condolences to the family of the deceased victim. Our thoughts are with the injured victims and their families in hopes of a full recovery.
DUI Accidents in Nevada
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, Nevada ranked in the top 15 states for fatal DUI accidents. Based on the number of DUI accidents that occur between 9:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m., or brunch hours, the Silver State takes the number 12 spot.
In fact, these deadly DUI wrecks hit an all-time high in Nevada in 2018 alone. Authorities reported more than 330 alcohol-related traffic deaths on state roads and highways, marking a 6% increase over the previous year.
Sadly, victims and their families pay the price for other drivers’ negligent actions. In fact, victims typically face serious financial roadblocks, long-term physical issues, and major emotional trauma.
Oftentimes, when victims succumb to their injuries, their grieving family members must cope with expensive medical and funerary costs, exacerbating the tragic circumstances they already face.
